A friend of mine who knows my love of the various Asian cuisines recommended Kai Japanese and Asian Cuisine on Nacogdoches Road. The next day, the restaurant was featured on Groupon. So I purchased one and gave the place a try.
The location isn’t fancy — an old Pizza Hut building — but the inside is very clean and comfortable. More to the point, the food is really good and the prices are reasonable.
For appetizers, I like ebi and kappa maki.\
Both were fresh and nicely prepared. And I have to admit that I like a place that knows what kappa maki is when one orders it. I hate having to say “cucumber roll.”
Each entree comes with a choice of soup, and before we knew our entrees, we were offered and brought soup. I am a miso soup person.
The entrees were also good and the portions generous.
The lunch portion of shrimp and vegetable tempera was really good. The shrimp and vegetable pieces were lightly breaded and crisp. The flavors were good. I admit to a weakness for tempera broccoli. Kai’s was excellent.
My dining partner ordered the yakisoba with chicken.
The noodles were properly seasoned and not soggy. Large, thin strips of chicken, some broccoli heads, and some other greens were sauteed into the noodles and yakisoba sauce. The dish was hot and plentiful and good.
The Japanese menu was proving itself worthy. On my next visit, I sampled from the Korean entrees.
The beef bulgogi was really, really good. The beef was sauteed in a blend of ginger, sugar and soy, and served sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds on a bed of raw onions. Served on a sizzling platter, the juice and sauce from the beef softened the onions. Served with white rice, this dish was a winner!
Kai also offers some Chinese dishes, which I haven’t tried. All the entrees are reasonably priced and the service is excellent. The wait staff checks on the tables constantly. This place wants return business, and they make customers want to return. I know that I will!
Kai’s NE location is located at 12146 Nacogdoches Road. The other location, 2535 NW Loop 410, offers a Sunday brunch and sushi-making classes. More information and menus can be viewed at http://www.kaisushisa.com/.
